Rwandan beekeepers travelled to beekeeping best practices during a modern beekeeping training course in Kenya. The training which was part of one week study tour was co-sponsored by The Hive Group together with SNV Rwanda and organized jointly between The Hive Ltd, Kenya and The Hive Rwanda Ltd, the group’s two subsidiaries in Kenya and Rwanda respectively.
The tour which was conducted in the company’s apiaries in Masinga and Yatta in Eastern Kenya, was intended to show the beekeepers how to operate the CAB hive to achieve maximum yields of honey and other bee products. The farmers who were selected from the districts of Rubavu, Bugesera and Gicumbi benefited from the Api-Business development Project, a partnership between SNV Rwanda and The Hive Group aimed at shifting Rwandan beekeepers from traditional subsistence beekeeping to modern commercial beekeeping enterprises.
The trainees committed to follow good practices learned in their own enterprises so that they can harvest more honey sustainably and earn improved incomes from the company’s premium farm gate prices for the honey produced.
To date these team of beekeepers have become a very important source of practical knowledge amongst Rwandan beekeepers.
